Decky Does A Broco

“Under the direction of Ethan Nienaber, the five actors are tremendously convincing as four nine-year-olds and one 12-year-old as they spend their time at the swings in Elder Park, Girvan, south of Glasgow.”

-Victor Gluck

Decky Does A Bronco by Douglas Maxwell is the tragically comedic story of a crew of nine-year-old boys who spend the summer of 1983 together; it is retold as a memory play by David, one of the boys of the crew who is now an adult. Doing a Bronco, which is the act of working the swing up while standing on it and then kicking it over the top bar of the swing set, is the social benchmark for young boys at the time. It is a dangerous mixture of both athleticism and vandalism (needing someone of adult height to bring it back down). Decky, the smallest of the bunch and the only one who cannot Bronco, is determined to climb the social ranks by finally completing the stunt for the first time. As an adult, David recounts the disastrous event of that summer which ultimately robbed the crew of their innocence as children and continues to haunt them as adults to this day.
